INSTRUCTIONS FOR LUNA KAUFMAN WRITING CONTEST

  1. Students in grades 5 through College may participate.
  2. Students may submit written work in either the research or creative writing category. Any aspect of Holocaust, genocide and human rights studies may be explored. Each submission should be original in its presentation.
  3. Papers should be typed, double-spaced, one-sided only, on 8 1/2 x 11” paper with 1-inch margins. There is no minimum or maximum number of pages required.
  4. Research papers should be properly annotated and should have a bibliography attached. Direct quotes from published works should be credited. Footnotes are to be included at the bottom of each page.
  5. Papers will go into the files of the Holocaust, Genocide & Human Rights Education Center (HGHREC); they will not be returned to the student contributor.  Completed release forms must accompany all the entries to allow for publication in our future anthologies and for future use of the work by HGHREC.  
  6. Fully completed applications must accompany each entry. We must have a reliable email address and telephone number on each entry. Written entries must be received at Brookdale Community College no later than February 25, 2010. Submissions  received after that date cannot be properly judged therefore will not be honored.
  7. All entrants will receive a certificate of participation in the contest.
  8. Papers will be judged according to grade level groups:

Group I:  Grades 5 and 6    Group III: Grades 9   and 10    Group V: College
Group II: Grades 7 and 8    Group IV: Grades 11 and 12

Awards of $50 United States Savings Bonds will be presented in each group: for the best Research paper, and best Creative Writing effort (essay, poem, short story, song lyrics, short play).  
Following notification of winning status and in order to obtain the award of a $50 US Savings Bond, students must provide HGHREC with:

  • Their Social Security number
  • An electronic copy of the winner’s information form (to be provided by the Center)
  • An electronic copy of their written submission

IMPORTANT NOTICE: For students interested in the Writing contest, HGHREC offers Writing Workshops both here on the Brookdale College Campus and at your school.
