Etty- March 9, 7PM
Adapted and performed by Susan Stein and directed by the acclaimed actor, director, and playwright Austin Pendleton, Etty is a gripping portrayal of one woman’s struggle to declare her humanity in the face of unspeakable brutality.
Using only Etty Hillesum’s words, Susan Stein’s adaption brings us to 1943 when Etty, a 29-year-old Dutch Jew, is about to be deported to Auschwitz. As she prepares for her life in the camps, she digs deeper into her soul to understand this “piece of history” and root out any hatred or bitterness, believing that humanity is the best and only solution for survival.
Etty refuses to hate the Nazis or see herself as a victim, unwilling to harden herself against the horrors she experiences. Instead, she offers a new form of resistance with her wry humor, deep sensuality and candor. Etty’s words reach out from the Holocaust and allow us to see the power of hope and individual thought in the most extreme circumstances.
